Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the focus of a new episode of the podcast 'Un bri de ciència'

Today, World Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Day, Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) premieres the sixth episode of its podcast 'Un bri de ciència'. Researcher Josep Manyé explains the work of his team to combat this group of diseases, and a patient shares her experiences with Crohn's disease.

The gut microbiota consists of billions of bacteria and other microorganisms found in our intestines. When the immune system loses control over these microorganisms, it can cause lesions to the gut and affect the body as a whole.

Patients, who are increasingly younger, may suffer from flare-ups that prevent them from leading a normal life for weeks or months. In addition, the disease affects their daily lives beyond these episodes.

There are currently some treatments that keep the disease in remission. However, the need for curative therapy has become apparent. The only solution in severe cases is surgery, with all that this entails.

In its sixth instalment, the podcast 'Un bri de ciència' features Josep Manyé, co-leader of the IGTP's Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) Research Group, who explains the various causes associated with inflammatory bowel disease and his group's projects to develop predictive mechanisms and a new therapy.

The episode also gives voice to a patient, who shares her experience with the disease. She explains what her first flare-up was like, how the disease affects her daily life, and what treatment she has to follow.

The podcast contributes to IGTP's awareness-raising and dissemination objectives. This project ensures that the cutting-edge research conducted on the Can Ruti Campus reaches a wide and diverse audience.
